First Pole Dance Lesson: What You Need to Get Started | Beginner’s Guide
Share
If you're reading this article, you've probably just booked your first Pole Dance lesson.
Or maybe you've been thinking about it for weeks and still haven't found the courage to walk into that studio.
In either case, we want to tell you one thing:
welcome. ❤️
Because almost everyone you see climbing the pole today, doing incredible inversions, or dancing naturally in a pair of Pleasers has had a first day.
A day when they didn't know what to wear.
They didn't know what a grip was.
They looked at the 20 cm heels thinking: “Me up there? Never in my life.”
And maybe after the first lesson, they had sore muscles they didn't even know they had. 😅
It's all completely normal.
Pole Dance is a journey, and if you've decided to begin it, we want to help you prepare for your first steps.
First of all: what really is Pole Dance?
Forget for a moment what you thought you knew.
Today's Pole Dance is a vast world made up of sport, technique, dance, strength, flexibility, music, creativity, and personal expression.
And perhaps that's precisely its most beautiful characteristic:
there's no single way to be a pole dancer.
Some people love training so they can finally nail that move that seemed impossible.
People who love to dance.
People looking for a complete workout.
People who want to feel more confident in their bodies.
People who join out of curiosity and, a few months later, can't imagine their week without Pole Dance anymore.
In this world, you'll also often come across two terms:
Pole Sport and Exotic Pole.
Let's see what they mean.
Pole Sport: when you discover how strong your body can become

Pole Sport focuses heavily on athletic and technical aspects.
You'll gradually learn grips, spins, climbs, moves, inversions, and increasingly complex combinations.
But don't worry.
No one expects you to already know how to do them.
You don't have to be strong before starting Pole Dance.
You'll build strength by doing Pole Dance.
You don't have to be flexible already.
Flexibility can be trained.
And you don't need to have someone else's physique.
You simply need your own.
One of the greatest satisfactions will come when you manage to do something for the first time that seemed completely impossible just a few weeks earlier.
And it's a feeling that's difficult to explain until you experience it.
Exotic Pole: when you add your personality to the movement

Then there's Exotic.
This is where the pole comes into play more dance, musicality, fluidity, floorwork, and personal interpretation.
It doesn’t simply mean “dancing in heels.”
Exotic has its own technique.
You’ll learn transitions, floorwork, combinations, and completely new ways to use your body and the space around you.
And yes...
sooner or later, they’ll arrive too.
Heels. 👠
The classic Exotic Pole shoes with a platform of 8 inches, approximately 20 cm, they may seem crazy when you try them for the first time.
But in Pole, they become part of the movement.
The platform is used in transitions and numerous signature Exotic elements.

And don’t worry.
The first time you walk in 20 cm heels, it will probably feel strange.
It’s part of the game. 😉
Pole Sport or Exotic: what should you choose?
The answer we prefer is:
why choose?
They are two different ways of experiencing the same passion.
Pole Sport can help you discover how strong your body can become.
Exotic can help you discover new ways to move and express yourself.
And many people practice both.
That’s exactly what we love about Pole Dance.
It can work on the person as a whole. 360°: body and mind.
Strength.
Coordination.
Flexibility.
Musicality.
Determination.
Expression.
Confidence.
And above all, that wonderful feeling that comes when you think:
“I didn’t think I could do it.”
Okay, but what should I bring to my first class?
For your first Pole Dance class, all you need is shorts, a sports top, and plenty of enthusiasm to give it a try. Over time, you can add grip, knee pads, and, if you choose Exotic Pole, specific platform shoes.
Here’s the question everyone asks sooner or later. 😄
The good news is that to get started, You don’t need to buy a huge amount of equipment..
Let’s start with the basics.
Shorts and a top: skin is essential!
If you come from the gym, your first instinct will probably be to show up in your favorite leggings.
For many Pole moves, however, they are not the ideal solution.
In Pole Dance Your skin is one of our grip points on the pole..
Your legs, thighs, knees, hips, and arms are progressively used to create grip.
That’s why you’ll often see people training in shorts and a top.
It’s not simply an aesthetic choice.
It’s technical.
For your first classes, choose something comfortable that allows you to move freely.
You can think about the rest later.
When you discover that grip exists
Then that moment comes.
You understand the move.
You know what you have to do.
You try...
and your hand slips. 😅
Welcome to the wonderful world of Pole Grip.
Sweat, temperature, humidity, and the characteristics of our skin can change how well we grip the pole.
That is why specific products exist to help improve your grip during training.
They do not replace technique.
But they can become great training partners.
That's why we also created a Pole Dance Grip Pack, designed to give you several solutions to choose from during your sessions.
👉 Pole Dance Grip: discover the pack to improve your grip

Always ask your instructor for advice: over time, you will also learn to understand which grip works best for you.
Because this is also very personal.
If you start Exotic, your knees will thank you
When you start doing floorwork, you will discover how often your knees come into contact with the floor.
And that is precisely why knee pads are one of the most important accessories in Exotic Pole.
They need to protect you without becoming an obstacle.
They need to let you move.
And they need to coexist with the fact that in Pole, we also need skin-to-pole contact.
It was by listening to these needs that we developed our EXOHEART Pole Dance Knee Pads.
We designed them for the Exotic world: protection, freedom of movement, and exposed skin for contact with the pole.
And above all, they can be worn without having to take off your Pole Dance shoes.

EXOHEART perfectly represents what we want to do with PoleDanceTrading:
listening to those who practice Pole Dance and trying to create products that meet the community's real needs.
But we cannot sell you the most important product
You can have the best grip.
Your first Pleasers.
Knee pads.
The outfit you love.
But there is one thing no store can put in your cart:
the desire to try.
There will be moves you nail right away.
Others may take weeks.
Some may take months.
There will be days when you feel incredibly strong, and others when a move you performed perfectly yesterday suddenly seems impossible.
It is part of Pole.
And that is probably one of the reasons why it inspires so much passion.
PoleDanceTrading: we are a store, but above all, we are part of this world
PoleDanceTrading was born around Pole Dance and continues to grow alongside it.
Over the years, we have met studios, instructors, athletes, event organizers, and thousands of people passionate about Pole Dance.
We sell shoes, grip, poles, knee pads, and equipment.

But what truly excites us is seeing this community continue to grow.
Seeing new studios open.
